Teachers at Mossy Head School participated in Learning Walks on campus earlier this week. They were able to visit other classrooms to observe best teaching practices from colleagues that they will be able to implement with their own students. MHS is dedicated to give our students an A+ education!
Sonia Sotomayor
First Hispanic Supreme Court Justice
Latina Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, NY in 2009. Justice Sotomayor became the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice of the United States, nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in a vote of 68 to 31. Sotomayor holds a B.A. from Princeton and a Law degree from Yale University. She served as assistant district attorney for New York County, being a judge to the U.S. District Court (appointed by George H.W. Bush), and serving as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Sotomayor has been outspoken about how her unique experience as a Latina has contributed to her work as a judge.

During this month of Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Walton County School District would like to introduce our Teachers of Spanish, Teachers who teach English to our Spanish speaking students, and the Bilingual Aides who assist teachers and schools with communicating to parents of our Spanish-speaking students. Lin-Manuel Miranda
Composer, Performer, Activist
Originally from upper Manhattan, Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Puerto Rican-American composer, lyricist, actor, writer, and activist. He has become most recently known for having written the Broadway musical, Hamilton, based on Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. This groundbreaking hip-hop musical earned numerous awards, including the Tony Award for best musical in 2016. Miranda famous quote when accepting the Tony Award was; “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside.” Miranda has received several Tony awards, an Oscar, a Pulitzer Prize, a Kennedy Center Honor in 2018, and been given the MacArthur Foundation’s genius grant in 2015.
Ellen was born in Los Angeles and raised in La Mesa, California. Ochoa, a PhD, was the first Hispanic woman in space. Ochoa earned her doctorate in engineering from Stanford University, joining NASA after graduation. She begain as a research engineer and was selected to be an astronaut in 1990. Her first mission in space was aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993. She went on to serve three more missions, spending almost 1,000 hours in orbit. Ochoa was the 11th director of the Johnson Space Center and the center’s first Hispanic director. Her historic firsts put her in great company with other pioneering women.

The Freeport Middle School Art Department studied the Japanese art of Sampuru ???? or Gyodan. Gyodan artists, Shokunin, study for at least 7 years to become masters of making fake food. We made our own Sampuru from clay. Way to go FMS art students!!
At Walton In”10”sity School of Excellence – Magnet Program, students of the month are celebrated by teachers and students alike. Teachers vote for student of the month based on our In”10”sity principles: Compassion, Accountability, Determination, Effort, Time, Desire, Respect, Initiative, Victory, Esteem. Students are honored by ‘tagging’ our graffiti wall with their initials, a framed picture displaying their achievement and school gear. Celebrating success is a way of life at WISE center.
Superintendent Hughes stepped into visit the Mossy Head Mustangs, helped with pick up and was able to talk to a few of the SPICE students, as well as dance with teachers in the hallways to music that brings joy to students, teachers, and staff during transition times before, during, and after school. Wow!!!!! You want to know where EPIC is....#hiddenjewel!
