WHS Celebrates Literacy Week, Florida!
Submitted by Christy English, Walton High School

In honor of Celebrate Literacy Week, Walton High offered free books to students, waived fines, gave out bookmarks, and had a spotlight on Braves TV of the top 10 reasons to read.  We also held a drawing for a $50 gift card and goodie bag.  Students that checked out a book during the week were entered into the drawing.  The winner was Emily Carroll.  Congratulations Emily!

MHS Celebrates Literacy Week, Florida!
Submitted by Heather Simmons

At MHS, we know that “Reading Changes the World!” Students started the week off with a door decorating contest. Each classroom read a book, learned a lesson from the book, and determined why that lesson is important in life! Then, they decorated their classroom door based on their book and the lesson they learned. The doors looked amazing, and we had 100% participation!

Students were challenged next to read 1 MILLION words on Tuesday. They devoured fiction and informational texts, took AR tests, and ended up the day reading 1,038,565 words!

On Friday, students participated in our annual Book Swap where they bring in old books from home and swap for “new” books to take home and read. Students loved picking out their “new” books, and I overheard a few saying they can’t wait to read them when they get home! It was definitely a successful week for literacy at MHS!
