Students in third grade at West DeFuniak Elementary had the opportunity to hear from North Walton Mosquito Control on the mosquito’s life cycle, types of mosquitos in our area, ways they prevent illness from spreading, and ways to spot areas where mosquitos can lay their eggs.

ECMS Perennial Math Team Member Jireh Paul (pictured left) was recently recognized for earning a near perfect score on the January test. She is now on the Perennial Math Website “Wall of Fame.”
Students participated in the final national competition on Friday, Feb. 19th, and the team did very well. Ava Razavi (pictured right) won special honors for earning a near perfect score on the February test. Ava will be featured on the “Wall of Fame” on the Perennial Math website.

The Atlantic Coast Theater performed for students at West DeFuniak Elementary School. Students enjoyed “The Mysterious Smile of Mona Lisa” which explored the art, science and music of the original Renaissance Man, Leonardo Da Vinci.

West Defuniak Elementary facilitated their own teacher-led professional development on Friday, February 12th. Teachers were able to choose from a variety of different sessions to attend, based on their needs. These sessions included teacher collaboration, student engagement, and using technology in the classroom. They also had the opportunity to participate in EdCamp and network with colleagues who had similar interests or concerns. Teachers left the professional development feeling inspired and truly excited!

The WHS band had a great showing this past Friday and Saturday!
Friday, Feb. 12, we had Solo & Ensemble, which is where students perform solos and small ensembles for a judge to receive a rating. Last year WHS did not send any students, but this year we had a total of 14. Thirteen students received a Superior Rating (highest possible), and one student received Excellent (second highest possible rating).
On Saturday, Feb. 13, the WHS Winter Guard had another great show at Escambia High School in Pensacola. Competing in a bigger class than the previous week against schools such as Tate, Milton, Pace, and Choctawhatchee, our group placed 3rd.

The AVID classes at Walton High School conducted a coat drive to help those in need. The coats donated were given to the Matrix and will be added to their clothing closet for citizens of Walton County.

The students may have dismissed half day on February 12th, but teachers at Bay used their half day engaged in valuable professional development to improve learning. Specials thanks to Ana Tomblin and Carrie Chavers for presenting two great sessions on Mentor Sentences and Increasing Student Engagement.
