Congratulations to Madeline Ptak, Riley Hamon, Caden Barnhart, Carlee Adams of Freeport Elementary School, and Kinsley Craig of West DeFuniak Elementary for being selected by audition to represent Walton County in the Florida Elementary Music Educators Association Regional Honor Music Ensembles in Gainesville, Florida! These students attended an all day workshop and rehearsals, and performed in concert on Saturday evening, October 27, at the University of Florida!
Madeline, Riley, and Kinsley performed as members of the North Regional Elementary Chorus, while Caden and Carlee performed as members of the North Regional Elementary Orff Ensemble. It was an exciting day of learning and polishing new music, developing and reinforcing good vocal and instrumental music technique, and meeting other student musicians from throughout the state. The culminating concert was fabulous, and the students, their parents, and directors shared an amazing experience that will inspire them to greater levels of musicianship!

Students at South Walton High School had the unique opportunity to hear a concert accordionist onstage, along with one of their own today, SWHS Senior pianist, Mia DuToit! Mia beautifully performed The Lark, from the "Farewell to St. Petersburg", by Mikhail Glinka/Balakirev.
Courtesy of Sinfonia Gulf Coast, Concert Accordionist Hanzhi Wang performed for the students in the SWHS auditorium. Praised for her engaging stage presence and performances that are technically and musically brilliant, Hanzhi Wang is quickly gaining recognition as a world class performer. Her concert career has already taken her around the globe with performances in Europe and Asia. Ms. Wang will make her debut in the Young Concert Artists Series in New York, opening the 2018-19 season in The Peter Marino Concert at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. Her Washington, DC debut in the Young Concert Artists Series at the Kennedy Center will be co-presented with Washington Performing Arts.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree at the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and her Master’s degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen as a student of Geir Draugsvoll.

Judge W. Howard LaPorte, Ret. of the first Judicial District of Florida, visited Freeport Middle School on October 24th, as part of the Justice Teaching program. The Justice Teaching Program is a partnership program pairing lawyers and judges with elementary, middle, and high school classes throughout Florida and was created by Florida Supreme Court Justice R. Fred Lewis. FMS students learned about the Bill of Rights under the U.S. Constitution. Judge LaPorte drew on his experience as a Judge and a practicing attorney to teach students their rights under the law and how these rights were developed following the Revolutionary War. Students in Mr. Wilkerson’s 6th Grade classes thoroughly enjoyed his visit and the opportunity to ask him questions. Judge LaPorte has been teaching this program at Freeport Middle School for the last 13 years.
